Magik Moss 101

The History of Sea Moss

It is thought that the consumption of sea moss & other seaweeds began as early as 400 BC in the Ancient Celtic isles & 600 BC in Ancient China…

The Irish began harvesting sea moss or Chondrus Chrispus, (known as Carraigín in the Irish Gaelic language) During the potato famine in the 1800s. Sea moss became a way for starving irish people to get nutrients during a time they had very little access to proper nutrition. The Irish began harvesting & eating Sea Moss & thus the name “Irish Moss” was born in honor of the Irish people who discovered it & its healing properties during times of devastating

In the 1800s During the Cromwellian era, Many Irish were sent to the Island of Jamaica. there, the Irish people taught the local Jamaicans the nutritional properties & benefits of Sea Moss. To this day, Irish moss is a staple in Jamaican culture, often used as a thickener in a popular beverage that goes by the name of Irish moss!

Chondrus crispus is not the only variety of sea moss that exists in our seas though! Other nutrient dense varieties like Genus Gracilaria also called Jamaican moss, and Eucheuma cottonii referred to as Gusô are other species of the red algae family used to make Sea Moss gels & products. At Lowtide Wellness we currently use Gracilaria and Eucheuma cottonii in our magik moss sea moss gels.
